Offset extension wrench · 15.4 in reach

Turn the bolt your ratchet can’t reach.

Seat your 3/8 in ratchet in one end, and the far end turns the fastener 15.4 inches away, through a gap too narrow for a ratchet to swing. Three square-drive adapters and a hex bit holder are in the box, so it runs the sockets and bits you already own.

How it works

A chain inside the bar, not a ratchet.

Each polished steel head carries a 3/8 in square socket. Your ratchet’s drive seats in the near head; a steel chain inside the bar carries every turn one-to-one to the far head, where an adapter drives your socket. The bar has no ratchet mechanism and needs no swing arc: your ratchet does the ratcheting, and the far end turns the same way, by the same amount, 15.4 inches down the line.

Where it earns its place

Anywhere the socket fits but the ratchet can’t swing.

Starter and alternator bolts, the back bolts on a power-steering pump, fasteners behind an intake or against the firewall, the bracket bolt behind a water heater, the nut tucked behind a generator’s housing. Put the socket on the bolt, lay the bar across the gap, and work the ratchet out where your hand has room.

15.4 in

Of reach

Socket to socket. About the length of a forearm, on a bar flat enough to slide in beside the fastener.

Three

Drive sizes

Adapters for 1/4 in, 3/8 in and 1/2 in sockets, plus a 1/4 in hex bit holder for screwdriver bits.

1:1

Chain drive

The far end turns exactly as far as your ratchet does, in the same direction. No gearing to think about.

Know its limits

A reach tool, not a breaker bar.

Use it with a hand ratchet or a low-torque electric ratchet. Do not run it off an impact gun and do not use the bar as a lever: the chain inside carries the turn, not the force of a cheater pipe. Break a seized fastener loose with a breaker bar first, then let the offset wrench spin it out. A drop of oil on the drive sockets now and then keeps it turning smoothly.
